Everything Is In Bloom -Wild Flowers Are Out

Vol 12 No 1

April 25, 2010

The Monterey Cypress MG club took to the back roads in April to be certain the wild flowers were doing their thing, and were they ever. The hills were alive with Lupine, Poppys and covered with green grass. The stream along Carmel Canyon was running and the sound alone was relaxing.

With all the rain and cold weather the past couple of months, it was a welcomed relief to have the sun bearing down on a lineup of MG cars as they motored through the back country along Highway 68 to  River Road and on to the Soledad Mission.

All gathered at Star Bucks in Del Ray Oaks about 10:00 AM, the Whittakers, Obbinks, O’Connors, Ken Stewart and daughter Maya, Spangenbergs, John Grundy and Stan Patterson in Grundy’s oversized MG (Packard), Don Martine and Anne Ross, and our leader Dan and Donna Gould. The Gould’s son Steven came along in his car to guide the first group and the Whittakers led the second group.

Off we went heading for the Mission in Soledad.  Both groups arrived fairly close to one another so we lined up for the tourists and several toured the mission and listened to some wonderful guitar music.

After a good break we lined up  again and headed toward Carmel Valley. The wild flowers were beautiful

A couple minor stops: Ken Stewart pulled over to close the hood on the car, and the Whittakers stopped to reattach a folding chair that was inching itself off the luggage rack. Other than those two minor things, there were no breakdowns.

It was on to the park in Carmel Valley where we found a couple of tables in the shade, which was perfect. And a special thank you to Donna Gould for the fantastic batch of cookies and short bread she baked for everyone. They were a knock-out. And thanks for putting the run together. Don’t know when we have had a more perfect day!

We sort of laid back for a while to be certain that the Marathon was over and there was no blockage at Carmel Valley Road and Highway 1. Sure enough, we timed it just right and we joined in on Highway 1 and everyone scooted home in good order.

We have some other events in the planning stage and will try to give everyone plenty of notice. On the list is a return to Ed Browders home and the fantastic collection of MGs and his spotless work shop area. Also in the plans is a visit to Jack Pasey’s automobile collection in Watsonville. Those who have been there marvel at his collection of over 100 antique cars.

Spring is here for sure.
