So You Want To Restore A Car

Vol 8 No 1

What a fantastic tour that was!

If you have never seen all the inner workings of a complete car restoration, you really missed out on one of the most fascinating tour most of us have ever been on. And how many of you ever knew there was such a professional facility right here on the peninsula? Randy Reed is the restoration genius in this community that knows more about antique cars, how to restore them back to their original state than anyone we know. And to tour his facility and be given a car by car tour was a very special opportunity. We all are more gratefully to Randy for giving of his Saturday.

We all gathered in the Costco parking lot and walked over to Randy's place. We looked at cars of all types and in various states of restoration. There was a Cord, Ferrari, a 1938 BMW racer, a Loco mobile and Laganda. What a sight to behold all these one of a kind vehicles. It is amazing to see how they are built. Most of them are built on very stout truck chassis. How long does it take to restore a car. Randy estimates somewhat short of 2 years. However if it is a very rare car it may take longer. A lot of time depends on parts availability. Some parts are being manufactured, but once in a while he has to search the world over to find the exact part. And he will only use the best and themost  perfect. If the bolts are required to be metric, that is all he uses. The same if it is Whitworth. He has bins full of each.

After the tour we drove over to Pacific Grove for lunch in the new Pacific Grove Golf Course Club House. What a treat that is. And what a treat to have your lunch prepared by the Chef of Chefs, Chris D'Ameilio, the owner of the Red House in Pacific Grove and the new owner of the Point Pinos Grill at the golf course in Pacific Grove. You will not want to miss a meal at this place. It is wonderful! Everyone knows of the Little Red House in Pacific Grove and what a fantastic Chef they have. Well you can now have the same experience at the Pacific Grove Golf Course and the Point Pinos Grill.

What a wonderful view of the Pacific Ocean while you are enjoying lunch in the private tournament room of the restaurant. We said a fond farewell to Glenda and Darrol Davison who are moving to Oregon and their one owner 1954 MGTF is up for sale. You had better be a real MG lover, though because Darroll has owned that car since it was new and wants to make sure it receives loving care.

Bruce Obbink reviewed some plans for events this coming year and encouraged everyone to check the web site, www.cypressmg.com from time to time for an update on activities.
